I mind how once we lay such a transparent summer morning, how you settled your head athwart my hips and gently turn'd over upon me, and parted the shirt from my bosom-bone, and plunged your tongue to my bare-stript heart, And reach'd till you felt. Swiftly arose and spread around me the peace and knowledge that pass all the argument of gpa the earth, And i know that the hand of God is the promise of my own, And i know that the spirit of God is the brother. 6 A child said What is the grass? Fetching it to me with full hands; How could i answer the child? I do not know what it is any more than. I guess it must be the flag of my disposition, out of hopeful green stuff woven. Or I guess it is the handkerchief of the lord, a scented gift and remembrancer designedly dropt, bearing the owner's name someway in the corners, that we may see and remark, and say whose? Or I guess the grass is itself a child, the produced babe of the vegetation. Or I guess it is a uniform hieroglyphic, And it means, Sprouting alike in broad zones and narrow zones, Growing among black folks as among white, kanuck, tuckahoe, congressman, cuff, i give them the same, i receive them the same.

Welcome is every organ and attribute of me, and of any man hearty and clean, not an inch nor a particle of an inch is vile, and none shall be less familiar than the rest. I am satisfied-i see, dance, laugh, sing; As the hugging and loving bed-fellow sleeps at my side through the night, and withdraws at the peep of the day with stealthy tread, leaving me baskets cover'd with white towels swelling the house with their plenty, shall. 4 Trippers and askers surround me, people i meet, the effect upon me of my early life or the ward and city i live in, or the nation, The latest dates, discoveries, inventions, societies, authors old and new, my dinner, dress, associates, looks, compliments, dues. Apart from the pulling and hauling essay stands what i am, Stands amused, complacent, compassionating, idle, unitary, looks down, is erect, or bends an arm on an impalpable certain rest, looking with side-curved head curious what will come next, both in and out of the game. Backward I see in my own days where i sweated through fog with linguists and contenders, i have no mockings or arguments, i witness and wait. 5 I believe in you my soul, the other i am must not abase itself to you, and you must not be abased to the other. Loafe with me on the grass, loose the stop from your throat, not words, not music or rhyme i want, not custom or lecture, not even the best, Only the lull I like, the hum of your valved voice.
3 I have heard what the talkers were talking, the talk of the beginning and the end, but I do not talk of the beginning or the end. There was never any more inception than there is now, nor any more youth or age than there is now, And will never be any more perfection than there is now, nor any more heaven or hell than there is now. Urge and urge and urge, always the procreant urge of the world. Out of the dimness opposite equals advance, always substance and increase, always sex, Always a knit of identity, always distinction, always a breed of life. To elaborate is no avail, learn'd and unlearn'd feel that it. Sure as the most certain sure, plumb in the uprights, well entretied, braced in the beams, Stout as a horse, affectionate, haughty, electrical, i and this mystery here we stand. Clear and sweet is my soul, and clear and sweet is all that is not my soul. Lack one lacks both, and the unseen is proved by the seen, till that becomes unseen and receives proof in its turn.

Whats more, in statistical terms, this 5 percent improvement over the subjects of guilfords original study is insignificant. In other words, the difference could easily be due to what statisticians call sampling error. Lets look a little more dream closely at these surprising results. Solving this problem requires people to literally think outside the box. Yet participants performance was not improved even when they were given specific instructions to. That is, direct and explicit interests instructions to think outside the box did not help. That this advice is useless when actually trying to solve a problem involving a real box should effectively have killed off the much widely disseminated—and therefore, much more dangerous—metaphor that out-of-the-box thinking spurs creativity.
No one, that is, before two essay different research —Clarke burnham with Kenneth davis, and Joseph Alba with Robert weisberg—ran another experiment using the same puzzle but a different research procedure. Both teams followed the same protocol of dividing participants into two groups. The first group was given the same instructions as the participants in guilfords experiment. The second group was told that the solution required the lines to be drawn outside the imaginary box bordering the dot array. In other words, the trick was revealed in advance. Would you like to guess the percentage of the participants in the second group who solved the puzzle correctly? Most people assume that 60 percent to 90 percent of the group given the clue would solve the puzzle easily. In fact, only a meager 25 percent did.
were obviously not as creative or smart as they had previously thought, and needed to call in creative experts. Or so their consultants would have them believe. The nine-dot puzzle and the phrase thinking outside the box became metaphors for creativity and spread like wildfire in, management, psychology, the creative arts, engineering, and personal improvement circles. There seemed to be no end to the insights that could be offered under the banner of thinking outside the box. Speakers, trainers, training program developers, organizational consultants, and university professors all had much to say about the vast benefits of outside-the-box thinking. It was an appealing and apparently convincing message. Indeed, the concept enjoyed such strong popularity and intuitive appeal that no one bothered to check the facts.
The correct solution, however, requires you to draw lines that extend beyond the add area defined by the dots. At the first stages, all the participants in guilfords original study censored their own thinking by limiting the possible solutions to those within the imaginary square (even those who eventually solved the puzzle). Even though they werent instructed to restrain themselves from considering such a solution, they were unable to see the white space beyond the squares boundaries. Only 20 percent managed to break out of the illusory confinement and continue their lines in the white space surrounding the dots. The symmetry, the beautiful simplicity of the solution, and the fact that 80 percent of the participants were effectively blinded by the boundaries of the square led guilford and the readers of his books to leap to the sweeping conclusion that creativity requires you. The idea went viral (via 1970s-era media and word of mouth, of course). Overnight, it seemed that creativity gurus everywhere were teaching managers how to think outside the box.

Although studying is considered a hippie legitimate scientific nowadays, it is still a very young one. In the early 1970s, a psychologist named. Guilford was one of the first academic researchers who dared to conduct a study of creativity. One of guilfords most famous studies was the nine-dot puzzle. He challenged research subjects to connect all nine dots using just four straight lines without lifting their pencils from the page. Today many people are familiar with this puzzle and its solution. In the 1970s, however, very few were even aware of its existence, even though it had been around for almost a century. If you have tried solving this puzzle, you can confirm that your first attempts usually involve sketching lines inside the imaginary square.
